The registry is asked directly where it offers RDAP; otherwise DNS tells whether the name is in use. For the extensions we sell you also get the price and an order button.

What this checks

Registry first, DNS second

For extensions with an RDAP service the registry's answer is final: a 404 means no such registration. Without RDAP the only public signal is DNS: a name with nameservers or an SOA is registered, a name with neither is probably free, though it could be registered and parked without DNS. The cart does the authoritative check at the registry before you pay.
