Reverse DNS for your VPS

Set the PTR record of your VPS address yourself in the control panel. The forward record must exist first.

A reverse DNS record (PTR) maps 31.24.249.0 back to mail.example.lu. Mail servers check it, and some refuse mail from an address without one. You can set it yourself in the control panel.

Set the forward record first

The panel only accepts a name that already resolves to the address. So before anything else, create an A record at your domain's DNS, for example mail.example.lu → <your IPv4>. If the domain is registered at NovaNode, that is done in the DNS editor.

Set the PTR

  1. Open the control panel(client area → VPS → Open control panel) and go to Network.
  2. Click Reverse DNSnext to the IPv4 address.
  3. Type the hostname, the same one you just created the A record for, and click Update.

Keep the two in sync

The panel warns about this too: if the forward record changes later so that it no longer points at this address, the system may remove the reverse record again. Change the A record and the PTR together.
