First login on your VPS

Where the control panel is, how the root password or SSH key reaches you, and how to open the console when SSH does not answer.

A new VPS is delivered with the operating system you chose when ordering. This page explains how to log in for the first time.

The control panel

Every VPS has a control panel, separate from the client area. You can reach it in two ways:

  1. From the client area.Open the VPS under My Products & Services and click Open control panel. You are logged in automatically and the panel opens in a new window.
  2. Directly. The panel is at vpanel.stratonexus.net. Reset login credentials on the same product page gives you a fresh password for it.

The panel shows the server with the tabs Overview, Media, Options, Network and Storage. Under Options you find Boot, Shutdown, Restart, Power Off and Rebuild.

How you get in the first time

What happens depends on whether an SSH key was selected when the server was built:

  • With an SSH key:the key is placed under the root user during installation and password login over SSH is disabled. Connect with ssh root@<your IPv4> from the machine that holds the private key.
  • Without a key:password authentication is enabled and the root password is sent to you by e-mail once the server has been built.

Keys are managed under SSH Keys in the panel's top bar. You can store up to 50 of them; the ones you select are configured when an operating system is installed, so they apply to a Rebuild too.

Rebuild: start again with a clean OS

Options → Rebuild reinstalls the server from scratch with an operating system from the list. Everything on the disk is lost, so do not confuse it with a reboot. The list of systems is in Operating systems for your VPS.

When SSH does not answer: VNC

VNC gives you a console that works even when the network inside the server is broken:

  1. In the panel, open Options → VNC and click Enable VNC Access.
  2. The panel shows an IP, a port and a password. Click Browser VNC to open it in a popup, or use your own VNC client with those details.
  3. Disable VNC Accesswhen you are done.

VNC runs over an unencrypted connection. Enable it only while you need it and switch it off afterwards; the panel says the same thing in orange.

Network details

Network lists the IPv4 address with its gateway, netmask and the resolvers to use, and the IPv6 address of the server. The Reverse DNS button next to the IPv4 is explained in Reverse DNS for your VPS.
