Request an AS number through NovaNode
What the RIPE NCC asks for before it issues an autonomous system number, how the request runs through NovaNode as sponsoring LIR, and how renewal works.
You need an autonomous system number (ASN) to announce your own IP space with BGP. The RIPE NCC issues them; a member such as NovaNode files the request on your behalf and sponsors the resource afterwards. The number is registered to you, not to us.
What you will be asked for
The RIPE NCC asks for the same things in every request. Have them ready before you order:
- Two peering partners.Networks that will exchange traffic with your AS, each with their AS number and a contact e-mail address. The RIPE NCC may contact them.
- IP space to announce.Registered IPv4 or IPv6 space that will be announced from the new ASN. If you have none, order the ASN together with an IPv6 PA sub-allocation or PI assignment, which covers this.
- A legal entity.The organisation object in the RIPE database must be a real person or a registered company, with the name exactly as on the official documents.
- Identificationof yourself and, where applicable, your company.
Less often the RIPE NCC also asks for proof of infrastructure in its service region or for invoices from the peering partners.
A second AS number
RIPE NCC policy allows a second ASN only if its routing policy is entirely different from the first one. "Another location" or "a separate project" is not enough; a request without a distinct routing policy will not be accepted.
How the request runs
- Orderthe product in the client area: ASN + IPv6 PA, or ASN + IPv6 PI. Both include the AS number; the difference is the kind of IPv6 space that comes with it.
- Provide the detailsabove through the order form or the ticket that follows it.
- NovaNode checks and filesthe request with the RIPE NCC as sponsoring LIR. We may come back to you with the RIPE NCC's questions.
- You receive the resourceonce the RIPE NCC has approved it, and it appears under your organisation in the RIPE database.
How long this takes depends on the request. A clean request with all four standard items can be done in a business day; a request that raises questions can take considerably longer, in rare cases months.

Renewal and billing
Sponsored resources are billed per year and all renew together on 1 December. The first payment covers the period up to 1 December of the following year; after that, a renewal invoice is issued before 1 December each year. A resource that is not renewed by that date leaves our sponsorship.
LIR products are paid by SEPA transfer by default. Bancontact, iDEAL or card are possible on request through a ticket.
