Connect your domain to NovaNode Sites

Which DNS records point a domain at a NovaNode Sites website, how ownership is proven, and what the status in the editor means.

A new site on NovaNode Sites is reachable on a preview address of the form s-<number>.sites.novanode.eu. To connect your own domain you need DNS records that point at us and a proof that the domain is yours. The editor shows both for your domain. This page explains what they are.

Domains registered at NovaNode

If the domain is registered through NovaNode on the same account, you do not have to prove anything. Add it in the editor and it is trusted straight away. The records below are written to the domain's DNS zone for you, and you can see them in the DNS editor.

Domains registered elsewhere

Add the domain in the editor. It shows the records to create at your DNS provider; they differ by kind of hostname.

A bare domain, such as example.lu

  1. A and AAAA records for the bare domain.example.lu points at the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses the editor shows. A bare domain cannot be a CNAME, so addresses are used here.
  2. A CNAME for www.www.example.lu points at s-<number>.sites.novanode.eu. The www version is served along with the bare one; which of the two visitors end on is a choice in the editor.
  3. A TXT record as proof.Name _novanode.example.lu, value novanode-web=<token>. The token is unique to your domain and is shown in the editor. This record is the proof of ownership. Without it nothing is served, so nobody can point a domain they do not control at a site.

A subdomain, such as shop.example.lu

One CNAME from shop.example.lu to s-<number>.sites.novanode.eu, plus the same TXT record (_novanode.shop.example.lu). If your DNS provider supports ALIAS records, that also works at the bare domain.

What the status means

The editor checks public DNS and shows one of these:

StatusMeaning
Waiting for TXTThe proof record has not been seen yet. Nothing is served.
Not pointing hereThe proof is fine but the A/AAAA or CNAME records still point to another server. Nothing is served.
LiveProven and pointing here. Next to it, the state of the TLS certificate: None yet (the first visit requests one; Check certificate does it right away), Valid with its expiry date, Expires soon (renewal happens by itself) or Not right with the reason.

DNS changes take time to spread; a record you just saved can take minutes to a few hours to show up, depending on the TTL at your provider. The editor rechecks on its own.

Mail on the same domain

The records above only concern the website. If the domain also receives mail, leave its MX and the related records exactly as they are; see DNS records for NovaNode Mail for ours.
